As the government shutdown continues, PA residents who rely on SNAP benefits will most likely not receive the expected November benefits on time. Many will turn to food banks or similar programs to supplement food for the time being. This article will help guide first time users on how to apply for and receive food and goods from the on-campus food pantry, the Lion’s Pantry.
The Lion’s Pantry is available for use by all Penn State students. It is located inside the lower level of the Smith’s Chapel, and has a once weekly food pickup on Fridays from 9 am to 3 pm. Students looking to utilize the pantry can access an order form. This is open to all current Penn State Behrends students and students are not required to prove financial need. Information regarding who uses the pantry is kept confidential.
Provided foods include canned foods like beans and soups, rice, cereals, milk, and pasta. They also provide toiletry items, such as toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo, and soap. Home items like hand soap, can openers, and toilet paper can also be requested. Period products are available anytime in the Smith’s Chapel. When filling out the order form, students can indicate allergies as well as preferences towards certain items. The request box at the end can also be used to ask for alternate pickup times or immediate pickup, though immediate pickup is considered an emergency request.
For those looking to donate to the Lion’s Pantry, a list of requested items can be found here. Items can be either brought or shipped to the Smith Chapel. Those looking to make a monetary donation can do so by check or online payment. While Lioncash cannot be donated, a number of items at the Galley can be bought with Lioncash and then donated.
