The Los Angeles Dodgers have beaten the New York Yankees to become the champions of this year’s Major League Baseball World Series. And while they were favored to win after taking an early three wins to one loss in the seven game series, their victory came after a stunning rebound against an early Yankee lead.
Despite only having won a single game by the fifth game of the World Series, the Yankees put themselves on a trajectory to force a win by gaining five runs by the fifth inning. These were primarily hit by Aaron Judge and Jazz Chisholm Jr., who have been some of the Yankees most dominant players this season. However, as was the case with many of their games this season, it was the Yankees’ defense that eventually opened the door for a Dodgers championship. Balls were thrown to bases with no one to catch them, or were thrown too far from those who were supposed to catch them. In one the series most memorable moments, Aaron Judge dropped an easily catchable fly ball, which is now seen as one the Yankees’ critical mistakes.
Capitalizing on these errors, Freddie Freeman and Teoscar Hernandez were able to tie the game 5-5. Despite a run and attempts to shut out the Dodgers, the team was able to strike out the Yankees with a final score of 7-6. This is the team’s eighth World Series victory, their first after their surprising 2020 victory against the Tampa Bay Rays, which ended the team’s 32 year streak of either losing or not appearing in the World Series. As well, the Yankees loss ties them with the Dodgers for most World Series lost by a franchise.
The Dodgers will celebrate their victory at Dodgers Stadium in Los Angeles on the morning of October 31.
