BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA Singer Liam Payne, widely known for being a member of the 2010s boy band One Direction, reportedly died on Wednesday, Oct. 16.

The singer fell multiple stories at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Bueno Aires. Payne had reportedly “jumped from the balcony” of his hotel room and had been pronounced dead shortly after 5 p.m., as confirmed by the Policía Federal Argentina.

Following the fall, medical personnel confirmed that Payne suffered a fracture at the base of his skull as a result. The Bueno Aires police department is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding Payne’s tragic death, and an autopsy will be conducted. A preliminary autopsy report has been released that has revealed that Payne suffered from multiple internal and external injuries due to his fall.

A 911 call has been released, which was called in by the hotel chief receptionist after becoming worried about his behavior, stating that Payne was intoxicated and was presumed to be under the influence of drugs and alcohol and that police needed to get to the hotel quickly. Though Payne’s name was never mentioned in the call. The receptionist stated in the call that the guest’s life could be in danger since they were in a room with a balcony. Employees of the hotel also have stated that he had been trashing the entire hotel room before his death.

Liam Payne’s family has made a statement following the heartbreaking death of the One Direction star. One family member stated to multiple news outlets that “Liam will forever live in our hearts, and we’ll remember him for his kind, funny, and brave soul. We are supporting each other the best we can as a family and ask for privacy and space at this awful time.”

While his former band members Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan, Harry Styles, and Zayne Malik have yet to comment on the tragedy, Style’s mom Anne Twist has made a tribute to the late singer, stating, “Just a boy…” X-Factor host Dermot O’Leary shared a tribute to Payne on Instagram with the caption, “The worse news. I remember him as a 14-year-old turning up to audition on The X Factor and blowing us away singing Sinatra. He just loved to sing. He was always a joy, had time for everyone, was polite, grateful, and was always humble. Sending love and prayers to his family.”

Payne is survived by his 7-year-old son Bear Grey, whom he shares with his ex, singer Cheryl from pop girl group Girls Aloud.
