After two years since the previous season, the final season of “The Umbrella Academy” was officially released on Netflix on August 8, 2024. Fans have been eagerly waiting for the final season ever since it was announced and everybody was speculating how the show was going to end and wrap up everybody’s stories. Well, to say the fans were extremely disappointed about season four would be an understatement. It seemed like everything about the show that fans originally loved just completely fell apart for this season. So, what went wrong?

The first thing that has to be mentioned is how it is six episodes instead of the usual ten. Because of this, the pacing of the season was very rushed and ruined a lot of the show’s momentum. Most of the storylines could not be fleshed out to their full potential and the relationships between the characters just did not have that same connection. Even when all of the siblings were together, it just felt like something was missing. Shortly after the season came out, some deleted scenes were released that actually showed great relationship bonding moments and character growth moments. Why weren’t those kept in??

In season four, everyone’s character development was thrown into the garbage. All of the character work throughout the previous three seasons just did not matter. It kind of just felt like the writers were just ruining the characters on purpose and were putting them in unnecessary plotlines and not allowing them to have any growth. Most of the characters, this season, did a lot of actions that they would have previously never done in any of the other seasons, which was unsatisfying to watch. And some new characters were introduced that seemed interesting at first but, then, they had no opportunity to be completely fleshed out so they felt pretty unnecessary.

There are SO. MANY. PLOT HOLES. It is ridiculous. Audiences found it increasingly difficult to keep track of just how many there were. I am not going to mention them to keep this spoiler free, but season four certainly raises more questions than answers. Sadly, these questions will never get a straight answer since this was the last season. There were so many plot lines left open ended and so many things were never explained. And plot points that have been built up for the entire show (like the Jennifer Incident) completely fall flat.

But was the actual ending good? Um, no. It was not. Again, I will not spoil what happens, but it just feels so rushed and that the writers just ran out of ideas.

It is pretty upsetting that such a great show ended in such a disappointing way.
