Erie, PA – The Penn State Behrend men’s tennis team was named co-regular season champions in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference, AMCC, after they had mixed results in a conference doubleheader against Penn State Altoona on Sunday, April 14, at Westwood Racquet Club. Behrend now has an overall record of 9-6, and a conference record of 5-1, following the conclusion of the second match. Behrend is currently in second place in the AMCC standings.
Penn State Behrend defeated Penn State Altoona 6-3 during the first match, and fell just shy to Penn State Altoona 5-4 in the second match.
The Lions took the lead with the No. 1 seed on a tiebreaker, which logged the most match points that have been won against Penn State Altoona, according to a statement from Penn State Behrend Athletics following the conclusion of the doubleheader. In the first match, Behrend defeated Penn State Altoona in two doubles, and four singles matches.
Akash Sangha, of Milton, Ontario, and Jonathan Laier, of Lansing, Michigan, came on top with an 8-6 win in the No. 1 spot. Owen Sinnott, of Erie, Pennsylvania, and Aidan Piazza, of Fairview, Pennsylvania, both logged their second doubles win in the No. 2 seed at 8-3. Laier and Sangha each came on top of their opponents in their singles matches in tiebreaker sets.
Laier, in the No. 1 spot, defeat Casey Hess of Penn State Altoona 6-1, 3-6, and 1–7, and Piazza accomplished a 6-2, 1-6, and a 10-8 win at No. 2 singles, according to a news release on Penn State Behrend Athletics’s website.
Berhend won the No. 5 and 6 singles matches as William Thomas, of Greensburg, Pennsylvania, and Luke Vunora, of Natrona Heights, Pennsylvania, respectively. During the second match, the Lions had the same winning outcome in doubles.
Behrend was also able to pull off two singles wins as Piazza scored 6-2, 7-6, and 7-4, and Vunora scored 7-5, and 6-3.
Behrend will return to action on Saturday, April 20, at Westwood Racquet Club, where they will match up against Mt. Aloysius in the AMCC Semifinal round of the postseason.
