Bradford, PA – Penn State Behrend Softball had positive action this past Tuesday, April 16, as they beat Pitt-Bradford twice in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) action 3-0, and 8-0, respectively, at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford. These two wins improved Behrend’s overall record to 20-8, and their AMCC record to 8-0. The Lions are in first place in the AMCC standings following this game.
Game One
Abby Tingley, of Union City, Pennsylvania, threw a complete one-hit shutout, and also striked out eight players. Behrend was able to log three runs in just three innings, on only seven hits.
Singles that occurred back-to-back put two runners on with Maria Jones, of Wilcox, Pennsylvania, advancing to third on the throw from Jocelyn McNany’s, of Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania, hit to center, according to Penn State Behrend Athletics.
Meghan Petitte, of Sugarcreek, Ohio, was able to get Jones in on a fielder’s choice bunt that was sacrificed, that made a 1-0 lead in the third inning of the game. In the following inning, Britney Shaw, of St, Marys, Pennsylvania, doubled to right center to allow Kayla Salvini to score, and make the game a 2-0 lead.
Behrend also had success during the fifth inning, where this time a double was made by Lexi Edgett, of Frisco, Texas, which made McNany able to up the score to 3-0. Pitt-Bradford was able to register one lone hit during the first inning of the contest, but failed against tingley during the other six innings of the game. McNany and Edgett both contributed a pair of hits to come up on top of Pitt-Bradford.
Game Two
Senior pitcher Kayla Lindberg, of Austinberg, Ohio, followed Tingley with three hits, which caused a shutout during the second game of the doubleheader contest. In addition, Lindberg struck out nine players in only five innings, and walked one, contributing to her ninth win in the circle. Sierra Williams, of Grove City, Pennsylvania, went 2-for-3, and had four RBIs, additionally accomplishing a triple that nearly left the field.
Julia Jones, of Wilcox, Pennsylvania, logged three hits in three at-bats, and scored two runs, according to Penn State Behrend Athletics.
The fourth inning of the game was the big event for the Lions, as five runs were scored, and then three additional runs were scored in the fifth inning. Williams scored two runs in the fourth inning as a result of a single up in the middle, before she scored on a double by Shaw to left field. Williams additionally provided a two-RBI triple during the fifth inning, which opened the door for hand in scoring in both innings.
Behrend Softball will return to play on Saturday, April 20 for an AMCC doubleheader against Penn State Altoona, at Penn State Behrend. The first pitch is set for 1 p.m.
