Togethxr, a media company co-founded by prominent athletes Alex Morgan, Chloe Kim, Simone Manuel, and Sue Bird, has become emblematic of a growing movement to elevate women’s athletics and has coined the phrase, “Everyone Watches Women’s Sports.” While the phrase itself originates from a particular initiative, its sentiment resonates deeply within the broader discourse surrounding women in sports.
In recent years, there has been a notable shift in attitudes toward women’s athletics. No longer relegated to the periphery or dismissed as secondary to men’s sports, women’s competitions are garnering increasing attention and recognition. This shift reflects a broader recognition of the talent, skill, and sheer athleticism demonstrated by female athletes across a wide range of sports.
Despite this progress, however, women’s sports continue to face many challenges, from disparities in media coverage and sponsorship opportunities to issues of pay equity and institutional support. These challenges are often heightened by biases and stereotypes that persist within the sports industry and broader society.
One such stereotype is the notion that women’s sports are somehow inferior or less entertaining than men’s sports. This belief is not only unfounded but also deeply damaging, perpetuating a cycle of undervaluation and underinvestment in women’s athletics. The reality is that women athletes compete at the highest levels of their respective sports, showcasing remarkable skill, athleticism, and determination in the process.
Take, for example, the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team, whose electrifying performances on the international stage have captivated audiences and inspired a new generation of athletes. Or consider the dominance of athletes like Serena Williams in tennis, Simone Biles in gymnastics, and Katie Ledecky in swimming, whose unparalleled achievements have redefined the limits of human potential.
And on a smaller, but no less impactful stage, Behrend’s women’s teams stand as a testament to the exceptional talent and dedication found in women’s athletics. This academic year alone, our women’s teams have secured an impressive five out of eight AMCC Championship titles earned so far during this academic year. Yet, attendance at Behrend’s women’s athletic events tends to be about a third of the attendance at the men’s events in the same sport, according to Brian Streeter, PSB’s Athletic Director.
Women’s sports are every bit as compelling, competitive, and entertaining as men’s sports. From the thrill of a last-minute goal to the intensity of a championship showdown, women athletes consistently deliver moments of drama and excitement that rival anything seen in men’s sports.
As fans, spectators, and supporters of women’s athletics, it is incumbent upon us to challenge these stereotypes and demand greater recognition and respect for female athletes. Whether it’s tuning in to watch the upcoming NCAA Women’s March Madness tournament, attending a Behrend women’s softball game this spring, or advocating for equal pay and opportunities for female athletes, we all have a role to play in advancing the cause of gender equality in sports.
So, let us embrace the sentiment behind “Everyone Watches Women’s Sports” and celebrate the remarkable achievements of female athletes everywhere, starting here at Behrend. It’s time to recognize that women’s sports aren’t overrated—they are overdue for the recognition and respect they rightfully deserve.
