HAMBURG, NY – In a remarkable display of athletic prowess, the Penn State Behrend women’s basketball team clinched a commanding 70-36 victory over Hilbert College in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) clash on Wednesday night. The Lions, who now boast a 15-7 overall record and a 13-2 standing in the AMCC, demonstrated their dominance in the second and third quarters, which proved pivotal in their landslide win against the Hawks.
The game kicked off with Hilbert scoring the first basket, but their lead was short-lived as Behrend responded with an aggressive 11-0 run in the ensuing three minutes. The first quarter ended on a competitive note with Hilbert narrowing the gap to 17-12. However, Behrend’s defense soon took center stage, allowing a mere six points in the second quarter and a paltry three in the third, effectively dismantling the Hawks’ offense.
This defensive stronghold paved the way for Behrend’s overwhelming 56-21 lead as the game entered the final quarter. The third quarter was particularly noteworthy, with the Lions outscoring Hilbert 27-3, showcasing their offensive and defensive synergy.
Morgan Altavilla, from Pittsburgh, PA (Baldwin), was a standout performer, leading her team with 17 points and seven rebounds. Demonstrating her scoring prowess, Altavilla contributed eight of the team’s 17 points in the first quarter alone. Rachel Majewski, hailing from Erie, PA (Villa Maria Academy), also made a significant impact with 13 points.
The Lions’ victory was a team effort with 11 different players contributing to the scoreboard, including a substantial 28 points coming off the bench. Julia Balaski, from Mercer, PA (Mercer), made a notable impact in her 12 minutes on the court, scoring six points, executing two steals, and blocking a shot.
This game also marked the fourth consecutive match where the Lions shot 43 percent or better from the field, a testament to their consistent and effective shooting strategy.
With this win, Penn State Behrend solidifies its position as a formidable force in the AMCC, while Hilbert, with a record of 4-18 overall and 4-11 in the conference, faces the challenge of bouncing back in their upcoming games. The Lions’ performance in this game sets a high standard for their remaining season, as they continue to vie for dominance in the AMCC.
