ERIE, Pa. – In a dominating display of skill and teamwork, the Penn State Behrend women’s basketball team achieved an impressive 119-16 victory over Wells in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) action on Monday night, February 5.
The final score spoke volumes about the Lions’ dominance, with Penn State Behrend improving their season record to 14-7 overall and an impressive 12-2 within the AMCC. On the other side, Wells continued to struggle, falling to 0-18 for the season and 0-14 in conference play.
Key moments from the game included several standout performances by the Lions. One noteworthy accomplishment was the first time this season that Penn State Behrend had six players scoring in double figures. This balanced offensive attack proved to be a formidable challenge for Wells throughout the contest.
In a testament to their defensive prowess, the Lions held Wells to just one free throw in the first half, establishing a commanding 60-1 lead by halftime. The Express finally secured their first field goal of the game with a three-pointer by Gianna Padula, 20 seconds into the third quarter.
Behrend’s relentless pursuit of victory was evident when they pushed the lead to triple digits, courtesy of a layup by Mya McElhinney, with 7:24 remaining in the fourth quarter. McElhinney, alongside teammates Sydney McDonough and Maddie Graham, played crucial roles in the team’s success. McDonough and Graham each contributed 13 points, while McElhinney added seven points to the Lions’ total.
Madilyn Boyer, with 17 points, delivered a season-best performance, further solidifying Penn State Behrend’s dominance on the court. Amber Carr, meanwhile, had a career-high eight rebounds, leading the team in that category. The Lions outrebounded Wells 68-20, showcasing their prowess on the boards.
Despite the lopsided scoreline, it was an unfortunate night for Wells as they faced foul trouble throughout the game. They were forced to play with only four players in the second half and just three during the final quarter.
Penn State Behrend’s impressive win not only demonstrated their prowess in the AMCC but also served as a statement of their strength as they head towards the latter part of the season. With a well-rounded team performance and an unwavering commitment to excellence, the Lions remain a force to be reckoned with in collegiate basketball.
