JAMESTOWN, NY – In a display of tenacity and skill, the Penn State Behrend wrestling team showcased their prowess at the Jamestown Community College Open this Sunday afternoon, January 28. With standout performances and promising moments, the Lions left an indelible mark on the tournament.
One of the key moments of the day revolved around Jake Brown from Stroudsburg, PA, competing in the 141 weight class. Brown exhibited resilience by claiming fourth place after a series of impressive victories. He commenced the day with a pair of lightning-fast pins, taking down opponents in 2:13 and 0:45. Despite a setback in the consolation bracket, Brown rebounded with his third pin of the day in 1:43, propelling him to the third-place match. The day concluded with a closely contested bout where Brown fell by just one point (D, 12-11), finishing with a commendable 3-2 record.
Zach Dellinger, representing Williamsville, NY, wrestled at 125 for the Lions. Dellinger showcased his prowess with a 2-1 record, securing two decision wins before exiting the tournament due to a medical forfeit. Meanwhile, Hunter Williams from Bothwell, WA, celebrated his first collegiate win at the 125 weight class with a pin in 1:31.
Ja’Shad Bumpers, hailing from Niagara Falls, NY, displayed his skills at 133 by tallying a 4-2 decision and a narrow 9-7 decision, notching a pair of victories. Nolan Fenton, competing at 197 for Behrend, collected two wins, finishing 2-2 with a pin in 0:55 and a hard-fought 15-12 decision.
Ryan Gildersleeve, wrestling at 174, boasted a 2-1 record, securing both wins by fall. Gildersleeve’s victories came swiftly, with the first in 1:29 and another in 4:30. Cole Neil, the second wrestler with a 2-2 record for the day, competed at 133, pinning his first opponent in 4:44 and then securing a dominant 15-4 major decision.
The collective performance of the Penn State Behrend wrestling team at the Jamestown Community College Open signals a promising trajectory for the remainder of the season. With individual achievements and a resilient team spirit, the Lions are poised to make their mark in the wrestling arena.
