HAMBURG, N.Y. – The Penn State Behrend women’s basketball team showcased their dominance on Wednesday, January 10, as they secured their fifth consecutive victory with a resounding 75-50 win over Hilbert at the Junker Center.

From the opening tip-off, the Lions displayed unwavering control, applying relentless pressure to the Hawks. The first quarter ended with Penn State Behrend in a commanding lead of 26-5, setting the tone for a formidable performance.

Behrend’s momentum continued into the second quarter, where they further solidified their lead, reaching an impressive 41-7 advantage with five minutes remaining in the half. The Lions’ offensive and defensive prowess was evident as they maintained a high level of play.

Morgan Altavilla of Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin, and Lilly Palladino from Export, PA/Penn-Trafford emerged as key contributors in the first half, both recording 10 points each. Behrend’s shooting efficiency was noteworthy, with a remarkable 62.9 percent from the field (22-35), while holding the Hawks to only 22.7 percent (5-22).

The Lions continued their control throughout the game, affording every bench player significant playing time. Four Behrend players scored in double figures, led by Paladino’s impressive 13 points. Altavilla, Rachel Majewski (Erie, PA/Villa Maria Academy), and Rachel Kaulis (McKean, PA/General McLane) also made significant contributions with 10 points each.

Sophomore Julia Balaski of Mercer, PA/Mercer showcased her defensive prowess, tying her season-high with four steals, while Paladino registered three takeaways. On the boards, Amber Carr (Girard, PA/Girard) tied her career-high with five rebounds to lead Behrend.

Freshman Emma Ficorilli (Wexford, PA/Our Lady of Sacred Heart) made her mark by scoring her first collegiate points with two free throws in the fourth quarter.

For Hilbert, Kelsey Schlagenhauf tallied a team-high 17 points, accompanied by eight rebounds, while Alesia Hamm recorded a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds.

As a team, Behrend showcased their efficiency, finishing 50.0 percent from the field (29-58) and 40.0 percent from three (6-15). The Lions capitalized on Hilbert’s turnovers, scoring an impressive 27 points off 27 giveaways.

With this victory, Penn State Behrend advances to a record of 8-6 overall and 6-1 in the AMCC, while Hilbert falls to 1-13 overall and 1-6 in the AMCC. The Lions’ commanding performance is a testament to their strength and determination as they continue their winning streak in the conference.
