International singer and global icon Elton John has earned his long-awaited EGOT status after winning an Emmy on January 15, 2024. He is one of the 19 people who have earned the title. According to the BBC, he has joined the ranks of Audrey Hepburn, Whoopi Goldberg, and Andrew Lloyd Webber.
The ‘EGOT’ is almost impossible to receive without being a multitalented artist that has the capabilities of achieving across the four major platforms. The title of ‘EGOT’ is the title of winning the most prestigious awards in all four categories of music, film, television, and Broadway. An artist has to win an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony to gain the title of ‘EGOT’.
Elton John won his Emmy award for most outstanding variety special (live) for his Elton John Live: Farewell from Dodger Stadium. He also has five Grammys, two Oscars for best original song, and one Tony for best original score.
In a statement about his Emmy win, the artist stated, “I am incredibly humbled to be joining the unbelievably talented group of EGOT winners tonight. The journey to this moment has been filled with passion, dedication, and the unwavering support of my fans all over the world. Even though the artist was not in attendance at the Emmys ceremony to receive his award in person, his presence was there. He was at home due to a knee injury. According to Variety, the Emmy was the last award that he needed to be able to have EGOT status. His EGOT status is one of his latest victories in his career, which includes being one of the top-selling artists of all time.
