The final weekend in September was one to be remembered here at Penn State Behrend, which celebrated its annual Parents Family and Alumni weekend on campus. The entire weekend was filled with great events meant for present and past students to enjoy with their families.
It is also important to note that this is Behrend’s 75th anniversary and that there were many additional events and opportunities throughout the weekend meant to commemorate this special anniversary. The new Nittany Lion blow-up statue was unveiled for visitors to take photos with, as the Lion holds a 75-year anniversary sign in his arms.
Additionally, the 75-anniversary mural on the side of the Reed Union Building was finished in time for the festivities this weekend. If you have not yet had a chance to see the artwork, you should stop down at the Reed Lot entrance to the building and check out the unique piece of artwork.
When attending the events this weekend, people are asked to register in order to receive access to RSVP for the special events they may have been eligible for. For an additional fee, people could participate in the Behrend Alumni Wine Tour or the Fun Run meant to benefit the Colten Brown Memorial Scholarship, the latter of which took place on Saturday morning from 7:30-9:00 a.m.
However, there were also numerous free and interesting activities taking place on campus. There was the family carnival, which also acted as a great fundraiser for student organizations, as all proceeds go to the clubs that volunteer to run the booths. There was also a free family picnic lunch that people could attend.
Family Weekend’s annual Midnight Bingo also took place, though admittedly, it was not at midnight in order to allow families to have time to attend the firework show in honor of Behrend’s 75 years.
For those who wished to explore a little bit more of Behrend’s beloved campus, Erie Hall was offering tours to those who were interested, and visitors could also tour the historical Glenhill farmhouse. There were also the annual Yahn Planetarium shows taking place throughout the day.
The Endowed Scholarship Celebration is also a staple of Parents Family and Alumni Weekends, as it provides an incredible opportunity to recognize not only the students who work incredibly hard to earn the scholarships that they do but also a place to recognize the generous donors who kindly offer to finance students educations in pursuit of a better tomorrow. The Breakfast celebration was catered by Behrend Catering and included several speakers who did an excellent job explaining the great impact these scholarships have on our campus.
Overall, as always, Parents Family and Alumni Weekend at Penn State Behrend was a huge success that was enjoyed by the many visitors to campus over the weekend.
