The Penn State Behrend women’s soccer team claimed their first home win of the season on Tuesday night, shutting out Houghton with an impressive 4-0 victory.
The game started with exciting moments as both teams displayed their skill and determination. Just six minutes into the match, Trinity Prestash from Phillipsburg, PA, representing West Branch, struck a powerful shot that hit the crossbar, showcasing the team’s early offensive presence.
However, it was Lauren Kiser from Altoona, PA, hailing from Altoona High School, who delivered the first goal of the game. Kiser confidently received a well-placed pass from Lizzie Hoff, a talent from Moon, PA, who studied at Moon Area High School. Kiser wasted no time, tucking her shot into the far corner, securing her first goal of the season and ultimately serving as the game-winner.
The Behrend team continued to dominate the game, displaying excellent attacking prowess. They unleashed relentless shots on goal, eventually extending their lead.
One of the highlights of the first half occurred with seven minutes left on the clock. Christine Patterson, a player from McKean, PA, who attended General McLane High School, nearly mirrored Prestash’s earlier shot, crashing the ball into the crossbar. Despite not scoring, Patterson’s effort exhibited the team’s unyielding determination to capitalize on opportunities.
In an impressive display of offense, the Lions of Penn State Behrend took control of the match in the second half, scoring three goals in a span of just 26 minutes. Their dominant performance resulted in a final score of 4-0 in their favor.
Trinity Prestash, already having a successful goal-scoring season, continued her impressive form by netting her second goal of the year. In the 58th minute, Prestash skillfully headed the ball into the back of the net, capitalizing on a perfectly executed corner kick from Christine Patterson.
Following Prestash’s goal, Marlene Andrade and Sydnee Barnett both found the back of the net for the first time in a Behrend uniform. Andrade exhibited her goal-scoring instincts by gathering a deflected shot by Kristi Buckenheimer inside the box and converting it into a goal at the 74:31 mark. Barnett showcased her shooting prowess with a remarkable strike from 30 yards out, capitalizing on a pass from Mia Zec in the 83rd minute.
Behrend goalkeeper Riley Morningstar, in her first shutout victory, rose to the occasion when faced with only two shots on goal. Morningstar showcased her skills and effectively denied Houghton any chance of finding the back of the net.
Ultimately, the match ended with a convincing 4-0 victory for Penn State Behrend, improving their overall record to two
wins and three losses. Houghton, on the other hand, fell to 1 win, three losses, and one draw.
The Behrend women’s soccer team showcased their exceptional skills and solid teamwork in this well-deserved win. As the team continues its season, the triumph serves as a positive momentum and a testament to their dedication. With this victory at home, the team aims to build on their success and claim more wins in the future.
