The Penn State Behrend men’s soccer team battled it out with Grove City at the soccer complex on Wednesday night, resulting in a scoreless draw.
Both teams struggled to find momentum on the offensive end, leading to a defensive battle throughout the game. The contest started with both sides unable to string together any significant attacks.
Senior goalkeeper Sam York from Akron, OH, became the hero for the Lions by preserving the shutout. In the 12th minute, York made a crucial save on a penalty kick taken by Grove City’s Hunter Hardin. This early save set the tone for the entire match as both teams fought to break the deadlock.
While goals were scarce, there were moments of excitement from the Behrend side. In the 33rd minute, Zak Schwarzel from South Park, PA, sent a free kick into the box, which was met by a powerful header from Justin LeDonne of Murrysville, PA. Unfortunately for Behrend, Grove City’s goalkeeper displayed his skills and made the save, denying the Lions a much-deserved goal.
In a closely contested match between Penn State Behrend and Grove City, the score remained locked at 0-0 until the final whistle. Both teams displayed great defensive performances, denying each other any chance to find the back of the net.
Grove City had its second chance of the game in the 87th minute when Camden Thomas managed to get his head on a cross. However, his effort narrowly missed the target, sailing just over the crossbar. It was a close call for the Wolverines, but they were unable to break the deadlock.
Tyler Vandemerwe was a standout player for the Lions, registering two shots throughout the game. Meanwhile, Thomas and Hardin led the way for the Wolverines, each having three shots to their name. However, both sides struggled to find the finishing touch that would have given them the victory.
Sam York, the senior goalkeeper for Penn State Behrend, once again proved his worth by recording four saves on the night. This marked his second shutout of the season, highlighting his importance in keeping the opposition at bay. On the other side, Teddy Almeter, Grove City’s goalkeeper, also had a solid performance, making three saves to keep the game scoreless.
In the end, it was a hard-fought battle, with neither team willing to concede a goal. The 0-0 draw was a testament to the defensive prowess displayed by both Penn State Behrend and Grove City.
