ALTOONA, Pa. – In a stunning upset, the No. 3 Alfred State women’s volleyball team defeated the No. 2 Penn State Behrend squad with a commanding 3-0 victory (25-18, 25-19, 25-17) in the semifinals of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Championships on Saturday, November 11th. The game, hosted by Penn State Altoona, witnessed key moments and standout performances that will be remembered for some time to come.

This victory was especially sweet for the Pioneers as they avenged a 3-1 loss to the Lions earlier in the season, proving that they were ready to bring their A-game when it mattered most. The reigning AMCC Champions put on an impressive performance, hitting at a remarkable .291 attack percentage while committing only 10 attack errors. Their strong play on both ends of the court forced Penn State Behrend into 20 attack errors, highlighting Alfred State’s remarkable defensive prowess.

Hannah Phillips, hailing from Pittsburgh, PA, and representing North Allegheny, received well-deserved recognition by being named to the AMCC All-Tournament Team. Phillips played a pivotal role in the match, leading all players with 16 kills and an impressive .371 attack percentage, showcasing her precision and skill at the net.

The opening set saw the Pioneers jump out to a 20-13 lead, eventually finishing with a seven-point margin, establishing early control. The second set proved to be a more closely contested affair, with the score tied seven times. However, Alayna Tomlinson’s performance made the difference as she registered three crucial points with a kill and two service aces, propelling Alfred State to a 25-19 win and a 2-0 advantage in the match.

Alfred State never trailed in the third set, completing the sweep to advance to the AMCC Title match. Despite the Lions managing to close the gap and get within three points at 20-17, the Pioneers exhibited remarkable composure, winning the next five consecutive points for a decisive 25-17 victory.

Meg Goodsel, from Corry, PA, distributed 25 assists, ensuring the Pioneers’ offensive efficiency, while Sara Nobach of Athens, MI, led her team with 11 digs, contributing to Alfred State’s strong defensive performance.

With this remarkable upset, the Alfred State women’s volleyball team advances to the next stage of the AMCC Championships with a 17-8 record, firmly establishing themselves as formidable contenders for the conference title. This victory not only avenged a prior loss but also showcased the determination and skill of the Pioneers, setting the stage for what promises to be an exciting championship run.
