UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – In a major development for Penn State’s Beaver Stadium, the university has unveiled its selections for the architect, construction manager, and consultant roles in a multi-year, multi-phase renovation project. The choices were made after a rigorous and competitive process and are expected to breathe new life into one of college football’s most iconic venues.
Leading the charge as the chosen architect is Populous, a global design firm renowned for its expertise in crafting sports and entertainment venues that create memorable shared experiences. Populous boasts a portfolio that includes the recently renovated Kyle Field at Texas A&M University and the upcoming construction of the new Buffalo Bills stadium.
“We are excited to partner with these top-tier firms for the Beaver Stadium renovations,” exclaimed Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Patrick Kraft. “These companies have a strong history of both renovating and building college football and NFL stadiums, and we know they will provide us with a great plan to make Beaver Stadium an even greater beacon for our University and department. We know these groups will preserve the history of Beaver Stadium while bringing it to a more updated and fan-friendly venue.”
Scott Radecic, senior principal and founder at Populous, and a Penn State graduate and former football team captain, expressed his pride in the collaboration. “Populous is proud to partner with Penn State on a transformational renovation to Beaver Stadium, reimagining and innovating the fan experience of one of the most iconic venues in college football. Our team will work hand-in-hand with the University to design and bring to life the spirit and tradition of Penn State, while setting up Beaver Stadium to continue to serve fans for the years to come.”
Taking charge of the construction phase will be a joint venture comprising Barton Malow, AECOM Hunt, and Alexander Building Construction. These companies bring to the table a rich history of collaboration on athletic facilities spanning two decades. As construction manager, this consortium will oversee the on-site renovation work at Beaver Stadium.
Scott Mull, project executive from Barton Malow, who is also a Penn State alum and State College resident, expressed his enthusiasm for leading this significant undertaking. “This project has been years in the making; to renovate Beaver Stadium is a passion project for many of us,” said Mull. “Our team is eager to deliver a revitalized facility with fan-facing innovation and premium amenities while still honoring and preserving the legacy and traditions of Penn State football.”
Nations Group, a national owner’s representative firm specializing in assisting universities with project development and construction management for athletic projects, has been retained by Penn State as a consultant for the project.
“Our team is honored to be a part of the Beaver Stadium renovation project,” said Nations Group President Chris Nations. “In conjunction with Penn State athletics and University administration, we will create a transformational stadium project to enhance the game day experience for all fans, generate revenues that are necessary for Intercollegiate Athletics, and create multiuse space and development. In doing so, we will be setting a new standard for college football stadiums.”

Initial construction efforts will prioritize safety and security, including crowd traffic control, and address field lighting performance. Additionally, winterization work will be carried out, insulating pipes and implementing upgrades to allow the facility to be occupied in freezing temperatures. This enhancement will enable Penn State to host a College Football Playoff game starting in 2024, along with other potential events beyond football games in the winter months, thus increasing revenue both for the University and the Centre Region.
Following the 2024 football season, a multi-year effort will commence to reconstruct the west side of the stadium. This reconstruction will maintain the traditional bowl-style seating while incorporating anticipated club and lounge seats, as well as executive and founder’s suites. Other anticipated renovations throughout the facility will include ongoing code upgrades, accessibility improvements, upgraded fan amenities, improved circulation to ease spectator congestion, enhanced restrooms, upgraded concessions, Wi-Fi and cellular improvements, and additional seating options. Construction is set to begin in January 2025, with completion scheduled ahead of the 2027 football season.
It’s worth noting that this substantial project is financed and paid for entirely by Intercollegiate Athletics, without relying on tuition dollars or educational budgets. The Beaver Stadium renovations promise to enhance the fan experience, preserve tradition, and solidify the venue as a beacon for Penn State and its dedicated community.
