ERIE, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend women’s soccer team showcased an impressive performance, defeating Alfred State with a convincing 8-1 scoreline in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) action on Tuesday, October 10.
The Behrend Lions wasted no time in asserting their dominance, scoring six goals in the first half to secure a resounding victory in the conference matchup. The game was marked by a diverse scoring effort, with five different players finding the back of the net, and one goal resulting from an unfortunate own goal.
The match’s opening minutes set the tone for the Behrend Lions’ dominance, as Lizzie Hoff, hailing from Moon, PA, scored her fourth goal of the season within the first five minutes of play. Maddie Haggerty, a key playmaker from West Seneca, NY, and Nardin Academy, provided her fourth assist of the season on Hoff’s goal, recording the assist at the 4:07 mark.
Trinity Prestash, representing Phillipsburg, PA, and West Branch, showcased her striking prowess by launching a shot that hit the crossbar before deflecting off a Pioneer defender into the net, giving the Behrend Lions a comfortable 2-0 lead.
The 12th minute saw Ashley Ornowski, a North Huntingdon, PA native from Norwin, initiating the third Behrend goal with a perfectly placed corner kick. Rachel Sickeri from DuBois, PA, delivered a well-placed ball off the corner kick, which Audra Kuzma, hailing from Center, PA, and Center Valley, expertly headed into the net, extending the lead to three goals.
The first half’s scoring was further bolstered by goals from Sickeri, Prestash, and Lauren Kiser, an Altoona, PA native from Altoona.
Trinity Prestash continued her standout performance by adding a second goal in the 48th minute, heading the ball past Sierra Schofield after a corner by Ornowski. Alfred State managed to get on the board with 17 minutes remaining, as Jena Schelble found the back of the net.
With this impressive victory, the Penn State Behrend women’s soccer team improved their record to 8-4-1 overall and a flawless 5-0-1 in AMCC conference play. In contrast, Alfred State’s record fell to 3-8-2 overall and 2-4 within the AMCC.
The Behrend Lions’ remarkable teamwork, diverse scoring, and strong defensive performance were undoubtedly key to their triumph in this AMCC clash, making them a formidable force in the conference.
