It started with a disparaging comment by comedian Tom Segura. On his podcast Two Bears One Cave, Segura voiced his alleged hatred for Erie, Pennsylvania. While most people let the comment roll off their backs, Erie News Now took Segura’s words and made a news story out of them. At the tail end of the segment, weatherman David Wolter made a joke about Tom Segura’s lack of hair.
This segment of the news found its way onto Segura’s other podcast Your Mom’s House. After Segura and his co-host/wife Christina P. played the clip, Tom called out David’s social media handle. The fans, affectionately known as “The Mommies” immediately took action.
The Mommies are known for their unique internet presence. Their most notorious actions have been the lighthearted needling of country music star Garth Brooks. After an awkward Facebook video Brooks recorded was ridiculed on YMH, and after Segura joked that Garth was a serial killer, The Mommies flooded the singer’s social media platforms.
Some of the more popular comments included, “where are the bodies, Garth? The families need closure” and “where is my grandma, G?” Along with these questions are other references to the YMH podcast namely, “Keep featherin’ it brother” and “I’m coming up in May.”
For his bald joke, David Wolter received the same type of comments or, as Segura worded it, “the full G treatment.” Wolter’s page, which had previously experienced minimal interaction, was suddenly flooded with comments inquiring into the location of several fictitious murder victims’ bodies. Wolter, understandably, was extraordinarily confused.
After researching the matter, he discovered the source of his new, strange comments. When he asked the new visitors to his page to stop the comments and keep his direct messages to “serious weather questions only” The Mommies were only emboldened and doubled their assault.
With each new episode of YMH, Segura included the “Weekly David Wolter Update” segment. It was during one of these segments that Tom challenged David to a basketball game. If Wolter won, Segura would donate $50,000 to a charity of the weatherman’s choosing. If Segura won, Wolter had to make a YMH-approved apology video and keep all social media accounts public for a year. Wolter accepted the challenge.
David Wolter flew to Austin, Texas for a 1-on-1, first to 21 points style game. Segura got off to an early lead and held an 11-7 advantage at halftime. More of the same followed in the second half.
Segura continued to score but hit a plateau at 20. Wolter began to rally. Worry crept into the comedian’s mind. Defeat became more likely with each basket. In the end, though, Segura managed to net the elusive 21st basket, ending the game 21-17.
Wolter’s effort was valiant, but he could not complete the comeback. Despite winning, Tom Segura still donated half of the proposed winner’s share to a charity of Wolter’s choice. David chose the Pompe Warrior Foundation due to his daughter being afflicted by the disorder.
Wolter did have to make an apology video laced with references to the Your Mom’s House podcast. If the reader would like to view the game, a short documentary is posted on the YMH Studios YouTube channel. Due to harsh language, viewer discretion is advised.
In an interesting turn of events, David Wolter recently announced that he would be moving away from the city he was defending to Bowling Green, Kentucky where he will surely be coming up in May.
