“The Glory” is a brutal and shocking series that shows the gritty nature of the human world.
After the global success of Netflix’s hit show “Squid Game,” the company has invested heavily in Korean-produced television series and movies.
Following the actions of Moon Dong-Eun, played by actor Song Hye-kyo, “The Glory” is a dramatic and thrilling tale of abuse, depravity, and revenge. Set in modern-day Seoul, the series dives into themes revolving around school bullying, domestic abuse, and the effects left on the victims. Writer Kim Eun-Sook and director Ahn Gil-Ho do not shy away from these taboo topics, creating a dark, depressing setting and tension that will keep viewers glued to their screens for hours. Jumping back and forth between the current actions of the plot and the exposition that lead to it, the story criticizes the cruelty of humans and the societal indifference towards wrong-doings.
Moon Dong-Eun has a troubled past and a growing thirst for vengeance. This anti-hero is a clever, calculating, cold, and morally ambiguous woman with an unrivaled sense of determination. Viewers cannot help but cheer her on, even as she makes decisions that would shock even the most stoic members of the audience. Kim Eun-Sook’s writing does not disappoint when it comes to the main antagonists either. Each character has a fully fleshed-out backstory and reasonable motivations, but the most unpredictable actions. Supporting characters are far from forgettable. Not a single opportunity is wasted, and no character feels like they do not belong. From the hopelessly romantic Joo Yeo Jung to the overwhelmingly positive and lovable Mrs. Kang, the characters are written beautifully and cast perfectly.
Every episode builds tension upon the previous one, revealing only the information that it feels viewers should have. Each plot twist and dramatic reveal adds suspense to the already turbulent story. Viewers will be left in awe, asking themselves endless questions in an attempt to understand the complex plot, only to be thrown into another loop before the end credits roll. Expertly written, the series keeps the viewer’s attention through carefully curated lore drops, side stories, tie-ins, and of course explosive plot twists. Often showing the main character Moon Dong-Eun interested in the tactical East Asian board game called “Go,” highlighting her impeccable planning ability. The board game is a great metaphor for the show’s ability to masterfully plan.
Having released at the end of 2022 interested viewers may be anxious to hear about upcoming installments to the story. However, due to the critical success of the series, Netflix has already released “The Glory”‘s second season.
Anyone looking for a dark and thrilling drama to add to their watchlist will be hooked on the world of “The Glory.” Rich with somber tones, excellent character development, and an even more impressive plot succession, the series is a wonderful addition to Netflix’s portfolio, for those who can stomach it.
