From the comical, “brainless” style of his hit single “lalala” to his latest drop, “still,” Vancouver-based rapper bbno$ has proven his musical diversity.
While I could personally write a comprehensive novel on bbno$–real name Alexander Gumuchian–and his insanely enjoyable discography, his most recent drop has dedicated fans like myself incredibly impressed.
“still” is an ode to the loneliness that accompanies a breakup. Lyrically, bbno$ explains the almost mindless repetitive nature of a long-term relationship. Making an extra cup of coffee, leaving room on the side of the bed, and even brushing your teeth together. It is unclear who he references, but that does not matter—the song is relatable no matter the circumstance.
Unlike the rest of bbno$’s discography, “still” is a slow, almost R&B/soul song. Some have compared it to the work of Joji, best known for his swooning and heart-aching ballads. The track’s subtle piano lets the lyrics float along, truly emphasizing their meaning.
That said, “slow” is a great song to soundtrack being left in the dust. Whether it be a relationship, a friendship, a situation-ship, or whatever—this song has you covered. Just remember the box of tissues for the tears!
As I sit and listen on repeat while writing this review, I can almost feel the level of emotion that went into the creation of “slow.” Once again, I am a devout follower of bbno$, which has made this drop a bit harder to listen to and ingest. I am used to his typical, upbeat, almost pointless lyrics that make you laugh, making “still” a shock.
With March approaching comes the anticipated release of “Baby Gravy 3”: his nearly annual collaboration with another of my favorites, Yung Gravy. Hopefully, this release will be a bit more cheerful and fun—but until then, you can catch me crying to “still.”
