“The Rocky Horror Show” is one of many Penn State Behrend Studio Theatre productions. This show is one of the two scheduled fall productions for the 2022-2023 school year. “The Rocky Horror Show” was performed live from October 27 through October 31 at 7:30 each day. There was also a show on October 29 at 2:00 pm.
“The Rocky Horror Show” is quite a fun, audience-interactive show. The show is not meant for younger children and leans toward teenagers and adults, focusing on a more mature audience. The audience could participate throughout the show with a bag of props they could buy at the front door. Said bag consisted of a water gun, a newspaper which was a copy of The Behrend Beacon, bubbles, and noisemakers. Throughout the show, audience members were to use props to interact, for example, using the water gun to act as though it was raining.
For those who do not know what “The Rocky Horror Show” is about, the show focuses on a young couple, Brad and Janet, who get stranded after getting stuck with a flat tire in a storm. The couple then discovers the mansion of Dr. Frank-N-Furter. Brad and Janet meet a houseful of characters including a biker, and Frank-N-Furter’s latest creation, a man named Rocky.
The show showcases fan-favorite songs like “Time Warp” and “Science Fiction Double Feature”.
Behrend’s production of “The Rocky Horror Show” was such a success that they added two additional viewings because all the other shows sold out. The cast in this production is so talented and are incredible actors and singers. The show is humorous, incredible, and so much fun to watch.
The audience participation takes the show to a whole new level and creates a whole new musical experience. Personally, this production is one of the best musical productions I have ever seen. Also, every song was incredible, and as stated before, the cast clearly consisted of very talented singers.
On a personal note, my favorite songs of the show were “Time Warp,” “Sweet Transvestite,” and “Hot Patootie (Bless My Soul).” This production was a student-directed show, with Behrend student Emily Wood acting as the Director.
I hope Behrend does The Rocky Horror Show again next fall. I am so excited to see Studio Theatre’s next production and see what is in store for the spring semester.
