Penn State’s October 15 match-up at Michigan State resulted in a 17-41 loss, resulting in a
tumble down in the national rankings and wiping their no-loss streak.
The Wolverines ran a total of 418 rushing yards, with running backs Blake Corum and Donovan
Edwards each posting 160 yards and two touchdowns.
Penn State has one last game against a team ranked in the top 25. Ohio State, which is ranked
second, will face the Nittany Lions at Beaver Stadium on October 29. Though Penn State only
has one more ranked team to battle, there are still future opponents climbing the rankings.
Minnesota, who will visit Beaver Stadium for the White Out game this upcoming weekend, has
been receiving votes in the AP Poll, along with Maryland, who will face Penn State on
November 12. Though Penn State started the season unranked, the team rose in rankings after
peaking at 5-0.
The team’s fall to Michigan devastated fans and players alike. Defensive tackle PJ Mustipher
said, “Just feeling like another team just completely dominated us…That never feels good. It’s
kind of embarrassing.”
Potential fuel to the fire may have set within a series of social media posts talking trash on each
other. As players entered the shared tunnel to the locker rooms, exchanges were made between
the two teams. Fortunately, no physical altercations arose.
Compared to Michigan’s 418, Penn State’s 268 yards of total offense was not enough to secure a
win. 110 of those yards came from two plays: both led by quarterback Sean Clifford.
Statistically, Michigan drove the entire game, despite Penn State’s original lead.
Michigan undoubtedly dominated the field, but Penn State still has a few more chances for
redemption in the rankings. With six games left, Penn State fans should hold onto their optimism
as there is plenty of hope for a good end to the season.
