On Thursday, September 8, the second annual Disney+ day took place, something fans from all over will now look forward to each year. Disney sets aside a day each year to release some of their most anticipated films, offer deals for their streaming service, and announce release dates for things fans are awaiting in the future.
Disney has purchased so many studios in recent years that Disney no longer means the same thing it did a decade ago when referring to movies and content. When Disney started listing off release dates, there was no preconceived idea of the type of film they have to be producing. Disney ranges from the classics and princess stories to animated films to superheroes, all the way to National Geographic. There is not a specific demographic of people Disney targets anymore as it has dramatically expanded its range, adding to the fan base and creating even more anticipation surrounding the release of new films.
To celebrate, Disney offered several exclusive deals for the day, including 75 percent off deals for Disney subscribers, and old Disney-owned movies re-airing in select theaters across the country. Specified AMC theaters offered five-dollar tickets to view special screenings of “Encanto,” “Thor: Ragnarok,” “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” “Cars,” and “Newsies” from September 8, the beginning of the event, until September 19.
Last year’s first Disney+ day featured fans’ first view of trailers for the new Marvel shows “Moon Knight” and “Ms. Marvel”. The Marvel theme continued this year as the newly released movie “Thor: Love and Thunder” was added to their streaming platform as part of the celebration. Disney also released the next episode of “She-Hulk ” on Disney+ Day, though that show has been airing episodes weekly.
Another heavily anticipated release was “Pinocchio” which was added to the streaming service on September 8. This film is a live-action remake of the classic 1940 Disney movie, starring Tom Hanks.
In addition to the above-mentioned films, Disney put out a list of other smaller things to be added, which includes some shorts and behind-the-scenes moments. The list includes, “Obi-Wan Kenobi: A Jedi’s Return,” “Cars on the Road,” “Marvel Studios Assembled: The Making of Thor: Love and Thunder,” “Remembering,” “Tierra Incógnita,” “Growing up,” and the “Epic Adventures with Bertie Gregory”
The Sing-along editions of “Frozen” and its sequel were also both uploaded to Disney’s streaming service, along with a Simpsons’ short film titled “Welcome to the Club” A collection of the most memorable dances from “Dancing with the Stars” was also added to the platform.
Generally speaking, this year’s Disney plus day did not have the same level of interesting and diverse media announced, especially since some of these films were already expected to be uploaded due to being in theaters. That being said, there were great deals to celebrate the events, and re-runs of precious beloved films for fans to enjoy.
