The well known TV personality-turned-politician Dr Mehmet Oz is running for the United States Senate in Pennsylvania, and recently received an endorsement from an important and controversial member of his party. Former President Donald Trump came out in support of Dr. Oz’s campaign, a move many have been expecting.
“This is all about winning elections in order to stop the Radical Left maniacs from destroying our Country,” said Trump in a statement about Dr. Oz’s TV record and campaign. “I have known Dr. Oz for many years, as have many others, even if only through his very successful television show. He has lived with us through the screen and has always been popular, respected, and smart.”
Trump also commented on Dr.Oz’s academic credentials as well as his medical records, stating that despite Dr. Oz telling Trump he should lose a couple pounds, he is in great health.
Trump’s support of Dr. Oz has created some controversy because Oz was not the first candidate Trump chose to endorse in this race. Previously, the former President had thrown his support behind Sena Parnell, an Army veteran who has since dropped out of the race due to allegations of physical abuse against his wife and children. Parnell has stated he denies the accusations, but dropped out of the race regardless.
David McCormick has also been seeking Trump’s endorsement, though it seems unlikely he will receive that support unless he wins in the republican primary. McCormick is married to a former Trump White House official, Dina Powell. Trump seems to be banking on Dr. Oz had a similar rise to fame as the former President did, starting on television and advancing to the public service sector in order to improve likeability prior to running for office.
The Oz campaign informed Fox news it plans to spend $1 million to run ads statewide of the Former President announcing his endorsement and stating “Dr. Oz’s smart, tough and someone who will never let us down.”
