How many movies can you think of that say the future will have time travel? Most likely people think of “Back to the Future parts 1-3” from 1985, 1989, and 1990. Well, parts one and three go to the past, part two takes Marty McFly to 2015.
Ryan Reynolds’ newest film on Netflix, “The Adam Project,” takes time travel just as seriously as “The Avengers Endgame” does, however, this time traveler gets his 12-year-old self involved pretty quickly.
After accidentally crash-landing in 2022, time-traveling fighter pilot Adam Reed, Reynolds, teams up with his 12-year-old self, Walker Scobell, on a mission to save the future. Having lost his dad, the 2022 Adam is warned by his mom that “The future is coming sooner than you think,” but that can’t possibly prepare him for what happens next: the 2050 Adam blasts into our time from 2050, employing time-travel technology to try stopping a villain by altering the past in order to change the future.
Continuing the Marvel-ous cast includes Adam’s dad, Mark Ruffalo known for playing Bruce Banner/Hunk, Adam’s wife Laura, Zoe Saldana who is known for playing Gamora, and Adam’s mom, Ellie, Jennifer Garner who many may not know has played Elektra in films such as “Elektra” in 2005 and “Daredevil” in 2003.
This film was everything Reynolds could have hoped for, combining action, humor and smart-alecky one-liners in a way that’s nothing new for any movie he’s been cast in, aka “Deadpool.”
At most, while it was funny, the action scenes were probably by far the best part. This film will get a 10 from me since the cast was brilliant, the humor was not forced and by the end of the film, everyone was connected to their respective timelines in the greatest hour and a half yet.
This film is a Netflix original, while Netflix prices have gone up, a basic plan is $9.99, followed by a standard plan at $15.49, and a premium plan at $19.99. Unfortunately, there is no student discount like Hulu and Spotify provide, but Netflix does still over a 30-day free trial.
