Last Saturday, Behrend’s women’s swimming and diving team traveled to Rochester, New York to compete in the AMCC Championship as well as the AMCC Empire Meet. The Lions won their first AMCC title since the 2018-2019 season. Helping them do so were the acts of many Behrend victories on individual events. Marcella Puglia won gold in the 1650 freestyle for the third time in her career and was followed by her teammate Bella Nadzam with the silver. Emma Webster won gold in the 200 back stroke, being her second gold placing of the championships. Also, Barbie Cessar won the 200 breast stroke. This was a three-peat winning endeavor for Cessar much like the one Puglia celebrated as well. Lastly, Emma Webster was successful in winning the 200 back stroke, making it her second gold finish of the championship. This was the Lion’s twelfth overall AMCC Championship win in program history. In the AMCC Empire Meet, the team finished second overall behind Nazareth.
The men’s swimming and diving team also made the trip to Rochester to compete for an AMCC title. However, they fell short finishing in second place after a valiant effort. Tim Compton was named Allegheny Empire Championship Men’s Swimmer of the Meet for his efforts. Compton won three separate individual gold medals. The Lions too second place for the first time in program history following 14 straight team titles. Jacob Eshelman also helped the men competing with a first-place finish of his own in the 200 breast stroke.
In Men’s Volleyball, the Lions have won nine straight matchups after dropping their first four matches of the season. Most recently, they have swept Thiel College and Mt. Aloysius 3-0. Diego Ortiz contributed 22 assists and nine digs in the first matchup versus Thiel. He also had six aces, 12 assists and four digs in the second matchup versus Mt. Aloysius. Adrian Martinez had a team-high 20 digs against Thiel. JP Goodsel added 15 of the team’s 37 kills against Thiel. The Lions will look to keep their winning streak alive in their coming games.
Penn State Behrend’s women’s basketball team will be competing in the AMCC Championship this upcoming weekend hosted by La Roche. Securing the number two seed in the tournament, they have a first-round bye. They will face off against the winner of six seed Penn State Altoona versus the number three seed Pitt-Greensburg. On the season, the Lions are 20-3 overall and have a conference record of 14-2. Due to having identical conference records, Behrend will share the regular season AMCC title with the La Roche RedHawks. In their final home game of the season, the Lions won against Altoona by a score of 76-44. Kara Haslett recorded a game high in points with 22. Haslett added eight boards, five assists, four steals and lastly two blocks. Alanna Dibble also had a noteworthy game scoring 10 points with 11 rebounds. This was Dibble’s fifth double-double of the season. The Lions will look to have success in the AMCC Championship this coming weekend as their season reaches it’s finale.
