Dolly Parton and Lionel Richie, rapper Eminem, and new romantic band Duran Duran were among the first-time nominees for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame unveiled on Wednesday.
For the first time, singer Carly Simon, musician Beck, and hip hop trio A Tribe Called Quest made the list. The vocalists Kate Bush and Dionne Warwick, as well as the bands Eurythmics, Devo, Judas Priest and Rage Against The Machine are among the 17 nominees for induction in 2022. Fela Kuti, a late Nigerian singer, is also on the ballot. 25 years after their initial commercial release, performers become eligible. “This year’s ballot recognizes a diverse group of incredible artists, each who has had a profound impact on the sound of youth culture,” John Sykes, chairman of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, said in a statement. “Their music not only moved generations, but also influenced the sound of countless artists that followed.”
Inductees are chosen by ballots submitted to over 1,000 artists, historians, and representatives of the music industry, and take into account the length of their career, musical influence, and body of work among other things. The general public can also take part in the contest online or at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio. The public’s top five musical acts are then presented as a fan ballot among the other ballots. Those who have been chosen will be announced in May, and they will be enshrined into the Hall of Fame at a ceremony in the autumn. Jay-Z, and others were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last year.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will also allow people to vote in the selection process. Fans can vote every day on the Rock Hall’s website or in person until April 29. The top five artists chosen by the public will form a “fan’s ballot” that will be combined with other ballots to choose the inductees for 2022. This September, the ceremony will take place. The specifics will be revealed later this year.
Many of the nominees for 2022 are still putting out high-profile work. Eminem will perform with Mary J. Blige, Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg, and Dr. Dre at the Super Bowl halftime show on Feb. 13; Duran Duran celebrated their 40th anniversary with the release of their 15th album, “Future Past,” in October; Richie, a stalwart of “American Idol,” will receive the Gershwin Prize from the Library of Congress in March; and Parton is keeping busy with a new baking collection, a book, and an album (each named “Run, Rose, Run”) due out in March.
Though the Rock Hall has been chastised for its scarcity of female inductees, the 2021 nominees – which includes Tina Turner, The Go-Go’s, and Carole King – and this year’s nominees are among the best female nominee classes in the last 30 years.
Fans can vote online at vote.rockhall.com or in person at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame museum in Cleveland to participate in the induction process. The “fan’s ballot,” which will be counted with the other ballots to determine the new inductees, will include the top five musicians chosen by the public.
