Many students may not know about the BVZ Radio station Penn State Behrend which is located on the first floor of Kochel. However, no matter a student’s major, anyone may join BVZ Radio either through the class COMM 3, or the BVZ Fast Track Program. This semester, BVZ Radio has a new Station Manager, sophomore Creative Writing major Rachel Schaffner. She joined the program through the COMM 3 class after finding BVZ while touring the campus during Behrend’s Open House event in February 2019.

“It’s a wonderful activity to be a part of since you can talk about anything you want, within reason,” Schaffner said. “I was unable to fit it into my schedule fall of 2020 but was able to get it in the spring of 2021.”

BVZ is not able to host many events since they are not a club that receives funding, but every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to noon, BVZ hosts their Hump Day event, where they play various music that students can vote on through their Instagram page @behrendbvzradio. Along with their weekly Hump Day events, BVZ is available to DJ for Penn State Behrend events upon request via email to Mr. Tom Deau, the COMM 3 Professor, or by also emailing Jaden Kole, the Event Manager, at jkr5762@psu.edu.

“My favorite thing about BVZ is how free you can be with your show,” Schaffner said. “My show is about weekly anime, games, movies, and TV show reviews and news. I love not being tied down to one subject a week. Every week I talk about something different and I genuinely enjoy talking about it.”

When Schaffner is not in classes or working with the station, she enjoys hanging out with friends, playing video games, and watching anime.

Anyone can listen to BVZ Radio through their website, www.bvzradio.psu.edu, or with the TuneIn app by just searching for BVZ Radio. Students can join the BVZ Fast Track program by contacting either Deau at tdd107@psu.edu or Schaffner at rls6117@psu.edu. Students can also find the BVZ Radio station in the far back of Kochel to ask for more information about the radio station or to request BVZ to DJ their events.
