On Tuesday afternoon, January 11, Erie High School was placed on lockdown. The Erie School District decided to shut it down after they believed they uncovered an unfounded threat aimed at the school.
There was said to be an anonymous report of a gun at the school. Investigators were called in to investigate the tip.
Police Chief Dan Spizarny reported that there was no confirmed sighting, and the threat was believed to be unfounded.
The report came in to the police at about 2 p.m., and promptly at 2:56 p.m., their initial search was completed. All students were cleared to be released from the building after police secured the area.
Fortunately, the police found no evidence of a threat, and everyone was released from the premises.
The investigation at Erie High has not been the first of its kind. Other schools in the area have gone into lockdown after unfounded threats were reported.
Iroquois High School was locked down on January 3 after police investigated the report of a potential shooting threat and discovered that there was no threat. Police said that a group of juveniles were held responsible for the unfounded threat.
Furthermore, police responded to several unfounded threats at Millcreek Township School District schools in December.
Fortunately, all threats that police investigated turned out to be harmless, or that of individuals who had no intentions of hurting school goers.
