The NHL is now officially back and that brings back new things to talk about! The biggest story this week comes out of Chicago and the abuse of Kyle Beach. Beach and Commissioner Bettman talked about how they can better protect players from this happening. In other news, the only team without a defeat as of Sunday night is the Carolina Hurricanes with a record of 8-0-0 and Brett Pesce had the game winning goal on the power play.Writer Kurt Dusterberg wrote this about what Brett Pesce had to say after the game, “This one felt good for sure,’ Pesce said. “Especially right now, we’re oozing confidence. We believe we can win every game we are in.” And with a perfect record and no signs of slowing down, can you blame Pesce and the Hurricanes for feeling like this?
Longtime Anaheim Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf became the all-time leading scorer for the franchise with 989 total points. He passed Duck legend Teemu Selanne and NHL writer Dan Arritt got a few words from Getzlaf after the historic moment, “To be able to be in front of our fans, our ownership, my family… that was a great thing for me.” Earlier in the week, the newest team to be added to the NHL won their first home game as the Seattle Kraken beat the Montreal Canadiens 5-1. Brandon Tanev tallied two for the club, and making his Kraken debut, Yanni Gourde scored a goal and received an assist as well. It is always good to win at home, but to get the first of the season as well as the first win in franchise history in your new stadium has got to be a huge morale boost.
Saturday marked Sidney Crosby’s season debut for the Penguins as he had wrist surgery in the postseason. The Penguins faced the Devils but despite getting their captain back, the Penguins lost their third straight in regulation, falling to a season record of 3-3-2. Across the border in Toronto, the Maple Leafs signed their 27-year-old defenseman Morgan Reilly to an 8 year, 60-million-dollar deal with an average annual value of 7.5 million dollars. He was in the final season of his previous deal, and has 4 assists through their first 8 games played. NHL staff writer Mike Zeisberger told NHL News more of what Reilly said, “But you just try not to think about it. The way it was handled from both sides was good.” NHL staff writer Mike Zeisberger wrote
Just recently placed on the Injured Reserve list, Jack Hughes of the New Jersey Devils is now expected to be out at least another 5 weeks mending a shoulder injury. In just the two games played for the team he earned 3 points with 2 of those being goals and 1 assist. This further adds to the Devil’s troubles on offense as they have been struggling with offense for the past few years. Power Rankings will likely have the Carolina Hurricanes at the number one spot as they are the last undefeated team remaining and they look to keep that up in their upcoming game against the now winless Chicago Blackhawks. The top 5 include them as well as the Florida Panthers, Edmonton Oilers, St. Louis Blues and the Washington Capitals.
