Women’s Volleyball continues to roll as they defeated Medaille last Tuesday by a score of 3-0 and again defeated Mount Aloysius 3-0 as well. With their two victories last week, the Lions have been able to acquire the number one seed in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference tournament. Against Medaile, the Lions were able to score 13 service aces as well as 28 attack errors. Behrend was able to jump out to a large lead thanks to the work of Kristin Reiland, who had 12 digs and nine kills on the day as well as Dani Kosslow, who had five of those 13 aces and set her teammates up with 19 assists.
Against Mt. Aloysius, standout performers were one more Reiland, who finished the match with no errors, and Kosslow, who tacked in an astounding 31 assists with five aces to go along with it. Other standout performers were Maddie Clapper and Brooke Joncas. Clapper led the team in digs while Joncas had double digit kills with 11.
Behrend’s Soccer teams only had one match each over the past week as the Women’s team defeated Medaille with the score being 7-0. The victory now improves the Lions record on the season to 17-1 with a perfect record of 8-0 in the AMCC. With that, this sets a program record for the most wins in a season. Brenna McGuire was able to finish the game with her third career match with three or more goals as she scored a hat trick within the first 12 minutes of the game. Four different Nittany Lions were able to score goals on the day and were assisted by three different players as well. Goalkeeper Morgan Harding was able to secure a dominant shutout. This match was the eighth straight shutout and was the Lady Lion’s thirteenth straight win. Their next match will be a playoff match taking place on Wednesday, November 3. The Men’s team unfortunately was defeated by Medaille by a close score of 1-0. While the Lions outshot the Mavericks six to four at halftime, they were unable to capitalize on it. Their next match will be the third as well and will be their season finale.
In other news, graduate student Jake Schmidt of the swimming and diving team, and sophomore Julia Sank of the diving team have been named AMCC Athletes of the Week. Schmidt has now received the award two weeks in a row claiming three individual wins and one relay when the Nittany Lions played against Alfred State on Saturday. Sank also wins the award for the second time this season. Sank scored season-best scores on the one-meter board as well as the three-meter board and she won both events. Her effort inevitably helped push the Lions over the top as Behrend defeated Alfred State.
Along with those awards, the Men’s Cross Country placed first out of four teams and are AMCC Champions for the second straight season. Seven Behrend runners placed in the top ten. Those runners were Phoenix Myers, Aidan Domencic, Chris Annear, Kody Klein, Nick Temel, Joey George, and Bennett Kerr. The Women’s Cross Country team also won the AMCC Championship placing first out of seven teams at the event. Olivia Nola was the individual champion finishing almost two minutes faster than her teammate and second place finisher Izzy Spires. This is the Lion’s fifth AMCC championship since 2015. Jessie Johnson, Emily Ferrans, and Megan Swantner also finished in the top ten.
