This past year has been filled with COVID, vaccines, masks and mask acne or better known as “mascne.” Wearing masks all day can trap humidity, moisture and sweat beneath a hot surface causing acne to form around the nose, mouth and jawline. Since students and faculty have to wear masks outside of their residency, we are all bound to fall a victim of mascne sooner or later. Even if you wind up having mascne, it is highly advised that you do not stop wearing your mask. Whether you follow a skincare routine or eat healthy, there are ways we can combat mask acne before it gets out of hand. 

 

  • Facial cleansers: CetaPhil and Neutrogena Acne Wash are a sure fire way of combating mascne. Dermatologists recommend you wash your face at night. Washing your face in the morning may leave your pores open and vulnerable to dirt and sweat buildup.

  • Wash your mask: If you have a reusable, cloth mask, please wash it in mild detergent in warm water and hang to dry. If you do only have a paper mask, replace your mask every one to two days.


  • Do not touch your face: I know this is a stressful time and many people pick and touch their faces, but do everything to keep your hands away from your face. Hands touch surfaces and are naturally very sweaty, which can cause that sweat to get trapped in the pores.


  • Keep your mouth as clean as possible: It is a given rule to always brush your teeth at least twice a day. Bacteria can build in your mouth and your mouth is trapped under a piece of paper or fabric for hours at a time with very little time to breathe. The bacteria from your mouth can cause acne to build. 

 

Essentially, mascne is caused by the skin and mouth. Keeping your mouth and skin clean is the sure fire way to ensure that one can keep their mascne at bay.
