Starting college can be one of the scariest, and exciting, things that a student can experience. Leaving your childish room and the four high school walls you have been staring at for four long years is the start of a crazy adventure.

Your new college dorm will be your new home for the next four years, so it’s a must to make it as comfortable as you possibly can. One of the most important factors that can transform your dorm room into your new home is your bed. The standard bed sizing for a college dorm is a Twin XL, this isn’t what most of us are used to but that doesn’t mean that we can’t make it comfortable!

The first thing you will need to transform a simple bed into your new sanctuary is a mattress topper. At first, I didn’t realize how important this was until I moved into my own dorm room. It is impossible to get a goodnight’s rest while laying on top of an uncomfortable mattress. For just $39.99, you are able to get a two-inch memory foam mattress topper that is sure to turn your bed into your new favorite spot in the room.

The second thing that you should know is: always go big or go home! Instead of buying a regular Twin XL comforter set, get a queen or even king size set. This will allow you to have an extra blanket at night to keep you warm, but it will also allow for the comforter to fall to the side of your bed and give you added privacy for storage. This is a great hack to assure that your room looks super cute but also allows you to store objects under your bed without making the room look messy or cluttered.

The last thing you should know is: always invest in a good water bottle. You will have a mini fridge that you will probably have to share with your roommate, so you won’t have space to keep your bottles of water. Investing in a good bottle will ensure that you always have cold, refreshing water when you need it. Bottles like Hydroflasks, Hydrapeak, etc. are not only great for the environment, but it will save you a ton of money around campus since these bottles are reusable and refillable at any water station around campus.

These are some small tips that helped me get through my freshman year of college. It allowed me to be comfortable and not miss my room at home. College is scary, but it’s a fun experience for anyone who wants to attend. Hopefully, these tips will help you as you embark on your new journey!
